Sir William Osler regarded “aequanimitas” as a vital quality for all physicians. Defined as “calmness amid storm and clearness of judgment in moments of grave peril,” he gave this title to his 1899 farewell address to the graduates of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. The essay “Aequanimitas” was published in a collection of essays in 1904 after Osler had assumed his new post as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the new Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Aequanimitas is also clearly an invaluable quality in tackling the intense, complex, multifactorial, problems and challenges of drug development.
In naming this consulting practice, we honor Sir William Osler’s contributions to the art and science of medicine, and approach our engagements with creativity, focus, passion, purpose and aequanimitas.
